Building a new climate politics rooted in people and place.
Halfway through this decisive decade, the barrier to climate action has become unmistakable: politics is falling behind the economy.
80% of voters want more clean energy investment. 65% of the public are concerned or very concerned about climate change. The economics have shifted decisively toward decarbonisation, and local leaders are delivering practical solutions to secure the shift to a safer, cleaner future.
And yet: climate action has become one of the most polarising issues in Westminster - fuelled by pernicious media and well-funded misinformation campaigns.
Against this backdrop, the old playbook for climate politics - in which climate was a feature of national leadership, a topic of broad consensus and a matter of "saving the planet" - has clearly expired. It’s time to secure the shift to a new climate politics.
One that is focused on jobs, pride, security, cost of living, health. It will be fiercely contested, complex to deliver, fragmented across information bubbles, and weaponised by incumbents fighting to preserve fossil economies and their elite status quo.
This new climate politics will be fundamentally about people and place.
The Big Shift Bureau exists to secure this shift. We are an agile strategic communications unit offering bespoke support to local political leaders. We act as a catalyst for campaign activations, an agile coordinator amongst partners at moments of political need, and a capacity-builder for leaders.
We work closely with a network of partners, who are central to the Big Shift’s success. These partners span organisations that have developed deep expertise in insights and data collection; messaging and communications; campaigning and amplification; and media / social media engagement.
We also work closely with industrial partners that represent workers across the country - whether farmers, or engineers, or trade unionists - so that leaders can truly connect with the people driving the transition on the ground.
The new political leadership we’re helping to build will start in Britain but it won’t end here.
By the end of this decade we want every G20 country to be governed by a climate leader.
Our model will help to inform, and learn from, leaders across the G20 and in doing so ensure that politicians around the world share the same understanding: climate leadership is a political asset rather than a political liability.
